HP Deskjet plus 4100 - Printer Setup Fails with HP Smart App (Android)

This document is for HP wireless inkjet printers and Android smartphones and tablets.
Restrictions in Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later might prevent HP printer setup using the HP Smart app. To complete the setup, connect the printer to your local network from the printer control panel, using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), or with a computer. Once connected, HP Smart can discover the printer.

Printers with a touchscreen control panel

Use the Wireless Setup Wizard on the control panel to connect the printer to your local network. Once connected, add the printer to the HP Smart app.
  1. From the home screen, touch the Wireless icon , and then touch the Settings icon .
  2. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
  3. Select your network from the list of available networks.
  4. If the list does not contain your network name, touch Enter New Network Name, and then follow the instructions to enter your network name. Type the exact network name, including any uppercase and lowercase letters.
  5. Type the WEP or WPA key (network password), and then touch Done. The blue wireless light on the control panel turns on confirming a successful connection.
    NOTE:
Go to Find the Wireless Network WEP or WPA Key or Password if you do not know your local network password.
  6. Return to the HP Smart app on your Android device, tap the plus sign , and then select your printer to add it to the app.
If the printer fails to connect to the local wireless network, print a Wireless Network Test Report for assistance.

Printers without a touchscreen control panel

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) or the guided HP print driver installation to connect the printer to your local wireless network. Once connected, add the printer to the HP Smart app.

Step 1: Connect the printer with WPS

Use WPS to connect the printer to your local wireless network.
  1. Locate the WPS button on your router, but do not press it yet. If your router does not have a WPS button, skip to the next step to connect with the HP printer software.
    NOTE:
Google, eero, Luma, and Plume are examples of router brands that might not support WPS.
  2. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button  for at least 3 seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash. The printer remains in WPS mode for two minutes.
    NOTE:
For HP Tango and Tango X printers, press and hold both the Wi-Fi and Power buttons (located on the rear of the printer) at the same time for 5 seconds. The front edge lighting pattern changes to indicate the printer entered WPS mode.
  3. On the router, press and hold the WPS button for 3 to 5 seconds or until the connection process begins.
  4. Return to the printer and check the status of the blue wireless light.
    • If the light is on, the printer is connected to the network. Return to the HP Smart app on your Android device, tap the plus sign , and then select your printer to add it to the app.
    • If the light is flashing or off, the connection failed. Move the printer closer to the router, and then repeat these steps. If the connection still fails, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Connect with the HP software (Windows or Mac)

Use a computer to run the HP software installer that guides you through the printer network connection.
  1. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button  and the Cancel button until both the Wireless light and the Power light flash. The printer remains in network setup mode for two hours.
    NOTE:
For HP Tango and Tango X printers, press and hold the Wi-Fi button (located on the rear of the printer) for 5 seconds. The front edge lighting pattern changes to indicate the printer entered Wi-Fi setup mode.
  2. Go to 123.hp.com, enter your printer model to download the software, and then follow the instructions to install the printer for a wireless connection.
    NOTE:
You might need to temporarily connect a USB cable between the printer and computer during the installation to complete the wireless setup.
  3. Return to the HP Smart app on your Android device, tap the plus sign , and then select your printer to add it to the app.
